About, EWANG’AN FOUNDATION

Ewang’an Foundation (EF) is a community-based organization which has been initiated by the current Miss Tourism Kenya-Narok County and Like minded youth that is championing for the rights of women and youth in Narok County- Kenya. The aim of the foundation is to promote the empowerment of Maasai communities living in Narok County through facilitating their access to education, health, social services, economic empowerment and cultural promotion and preservation and promotion of tourism. This is done through building on women’s and youths’ aspirations, education, economic empowerment and celebrating their achievements as far as possible.

We Ewang’an Foundation belief that the harmful practices which are part of our culture such as FGM, associated early marriages and early teenage pregnancies which have recently rocked Narok county as evident from the much attention it has generated from the media, are results of poverty and ignorance.

Empowering our community through education, social and economic empowerment will be a major boost in the fight against this vice.

For a long time, Maasai are one of the native communities in Kenya that were not entitled to education, healthcare and any other form of social and economic development. Changing this narrative by ‘WE THE YOUTH’ who have tasted the fruits of social and economic development through educating and mobilising our parents, brothers, sisters and fellow tribesmen will eventually help in the eradication of this vice

Maasai culture has adorable positive cultural practices that have stood the test of time. Thus, the need for protecting and preservation of acts and practices against the wind of change that is trying to eroding our identity. This culture has become one of the tourism attractions in this country and Narok county for both domestic and international tourism. This we must protect

With reference to the above, Ewang’an Foundation embraces the narrative that all steps can greatly improve self confidence and social capital for this groups. The activities and interventions put in the implementation of the programs, considers the issues that affect women and youths at different stages of their lives. In particular, our programs are developed to ensure clear understanding of the motivations and possibilities for girls/women and young people who are  the

entry point for ensuring the sustainability of the maasai community as a  valuable and a sustainable way of life.

While working with women and youths in the community, we look at their daily roles and aspirations in their households and communities, especially in relation to education, empowerment, maternal health, cultural preservation, tourism promotion, environmental protection and as agent of peace in the society. Ewang’an Foundation’s strategy is to work with these groups to create awareness that women and youth are the pillar in every society so they should not be left out.

We can build a better future for our planet together

What our volunteers have to say

Gloria Jones

Volunteering with Ewangan Foundation was a moving, fulfilling and potentially life changing experience. Regardless of your background, if you have a passion for humanity and transferable skills, both you and Ewangan Foundation will get a huge amount out of you volunteering with them. Unlike most volunteers perhaps I am not currently studying or working in the charity or development sector, I am an actor, but this didn’t mean my skills weren’t needed.

I spent five weeks working with Ewangan Foundation. I came to Uganda with the intention of gaining some work experience in the field of public health, my specialization at University. What I achieved here with Ewangan Foundation, however, was far more than I expected before arriving in Africa.
